Social Sciences Computing Services (SSCS) has begun the process of migrating the division’s nightly desktop backup system away from the centrally provided TSM (Tivoli Storage Management) and to an open source solution managed by SSCS. We have experienced difficulties in maintaining a consistent performance from TSM and have concluded that this transition is warranted. We expect to have the majority of users that wish to take advantage of this new system migrated by the New Year. We envision performing the transition by department. Once we are prepared to transition your department you will receive additional information. Upon completing the transition we anticipate this new system becoming the division’s sole supported desktop backup solution. Locally backing up files that are time sensitive and critical is always a best practice (see http://www.uchicago.edu/docs/policies/eaup/, under Roles and Responsibilities for the Individual) and one to consider during this time of transition. Most desktops in the division have the capacity to burn CDs or DVDs. CDs will allow you to store around 650MB on them while DVDs will allow you to store around 4.3GB. If you are interested in utilizing this technique we have provided burnable CDs and DVDs to most departments to distribute at no charge.
