University of Chicago's Networking Services and Information Technology has developed a Connectivity Package which is free to the school community. This Connectivity Package contains email clients, web browsers, and virus protection programs for both the MacOS and Windows platforms. You can get the Connectivity Package at the Campus Computer Store, located on the third floor of the U of C bookstore http://ccs.uchicago.edu/.

  9. How can I get software for my computer?
Most major software packages can be obtained through the Campus Computer Stores http://ccs.uchicago.edu/. The University of Chicago also participates in site licensing programs with many major academic software companies (Microsoft, Corel, SPSS, Stata, etc.), which allows faculty and staff to purchase yearly licenses for software at deep discounts. For more information on this, connect to U of C's Site Licensing Office web page. There are also several software packages already purchased for the U od C community which include anti-virus, Eudora and SSH software.

  10. What is the best way for me to ensure the safety of my data?
Computer users have two main options for data backup on campus at the University of Chicago: they can back up their data individually using their own backup drives and media or they can take advantage of NSIT's campus-wide network backup system, called Tivoli Storage Management (TSM). SSCS Desktop Support group actively installs, monitors, and troubleshoots over 300 networked computers across the Division which are on the backup network. If you would like to be part of TSM, or would like to learn more about it, please call us at 4-4146.

  11. What can I do to ensure protection from viruses?
Anti-virus software from McAfee is available in the Extras directory of your Connectivity Package CD. This is free to the University of Chicago community. There are many complicated options involved with configuring McAfee properly; the default installation is generally not adequate. If you are not familiar with this software and need assistance, please contact us at 4-4146

  12. My network connection seems to have dropped off. What can I do?
Do not plug your computer into a different network jack. Make sure your network cable is fully connected to both your computer and the wall jack. If it is connected please contact us at 4-4146.
It would be helpful to determine if the lack of network connection is occurring only in one Internet program (i.e. only Internet Explorer) or all of them. If you can check email, but can't get a particular web page to load, it's probably a problem on the web page's server. If you are unable to check mail, or view any web pages, then your jack is either dead or your computer is not configured properly.

  13. I can't seem to print a document. What can I do?
Make sure your printer is turned on and has paper in it. If it is a networked printer, check all physical connections. If everything looks okay, simply turn off the printer and unplug it for 10-30 seconds. Turn back it on and retry sending your print job. If this fails, please contact us at 4-4146.

  14. I forgot my password. Can you give me a new one?
There are many systems at the University and many of them use separate password systems. Here are some of the most common.
