SFTP ClientsTo increase security and privacy for users on the campus networks the University of Chicago has adopted SFTP as one means to transfer files to public campus UNIX servers. SFTP stands for Secure File Transfer Protocol. It comes in the form of a program that looks and acts like a normal FTP program (such as Reflection FTP on Windows, or Fetch on MacOS), but it is capable of encrypting all data that pass between it and the server using SSH as the encryption method. Whereas regular FTP passes your login and password in plain text and runs the risk of being intercepted, SFTP uses encryption to prevent others from acquiring your password. To use SFTP you will need to download the appropriate program. All these programs are free for use to members of the University of Chicago. Choose the version for your operating system: |
