Windows Machine Setup – For Staff

Before a machine can join the domain, the object must be created in AD. Once the object has been created in AD, you can proceed with the steps below.

  • Click the Start menu and open Settings
  • Click ‘Accounts’
  • Click ‘Access work or school’ in the menu on the left hand side
  • Then click ‘Join this device to a local active directory domain’
  • Enter ad.uchicago.edu as the domain name & click ‘Next’
  • Enter your CNET ID with adlocal\ before it (i.e. adlocal\CNET123) in the username field, then the password associated with your CNET in the Password field. Click ‘OK’
  • Then click ‘Restart Now’


****NOTE**** If the CNET ID for the user is already created and known, add that user to the administrator’s group following the steps below. Otherwise, you will need to do this after handing off the computer.

  • Click the Start button and type ‘local’ to locate and open the local users and groups panel
  • Click ‘Groups’
  • Double click ‘Administrators’
  • Click ‘Add’ to add the CNET ID of the user to the administrator’s group
  • Type adlocal\ before the user’s CNETID & click ‘Check Names’
  • Click ‘OK’ The user is now an administrator on the machine.

****NOTE**** The user will need to connect to the internet before they are able to log into their account using their CNET ID
